Thesis - Harpy Eagle by windfalcon Thesis - Harpy Eagle by windfalcon
This is the third in a series of ten paintings for my thesis, An Illustrative Exploration of Birds of Prey in History and Culture. This is the harpy eagle as seen as divinity by the Baniwa people of South America.

Kamathawa, depicted as a harpy eagle, was though to bring summer and send away the rain. In this painting, I wanted to show the harpy eagle clearing the skies of rain, and in the distance is one of the Tikal Towers. Although the Tikal Towers were Mayan and not related to the Baniwa people in culture or location, the harpy eagle is found in both regions. I wanted to show the cultural significance of this raptor in the rainforest regions.

Watercolor and white gouache on cold-press Arches, about 11X14 inches

Very cool! :)  You don't often see artwork of Harpy eagles.

Thanks! I agree - there needs to be more art of them.

You're welcome! :) One of my former managers went on a trip to the San Diego Zoo and tried to photograph their harpy eagle for me to do a painting of, but unfortunately, it's kind of high up, and also behind chain link, so it's not a particularly great reference photo.  I might still be able to get around it somehow, though.

I'm not sure if it's too big or not...the thing with harpy eagles is that they have this big crest, so it makes their heads look bigger than they are. It still might be too big, though.

one of my favorite moments from Animal Planet is Jeff Corwin holding one and it being so tall its head was above his and it pecked him.
