Barn Owl - Study - Revised by windfalcon Barn Owl - Study - Revised by windfalcon
EDIT: I didn't realize until now that the thing that was bothering me was the tail! It was too short! I have fixed it, and I apologize for this showing up in your devwatches again, but it was a fairly significant change.

A study for one of my thesis paintings. I wanted to do a study before starting on the actual thesis painting since their markings are so complex. This was indeed a challenge, but I think I have a better handle on their markings now.

EDIT: 2/16/08 - Changed the feet a bit. I like them much more now.

Watercolor and a little bit of white gouache on cold-press watercolor paper, 7X10 inches.

Geez. Birds, in my opinion, are hard enough, but water colors too, along with all that detail? Amazing job! This is an awesome piece. ^^

I love owls, but barn owls are just lovely to do. An instant :+fav: and you did a truly amazing job on this watercolor painting.

I love barn owls though I haven't seen one in real life. Water colour is hard to work with. i'm not much of an artists but I have played aroudn with water colorus for an art class. your ability with them is striking and I do love the way you left an area of white around the rest of the pic. :D

Love the shadowing of his face and the overall perspective. Those markings really are soooo complicated, I remember drawing an owl once *shudders* at the time I said NEVER AGAIN but I may give it another try after seeing this ^_^

and randomly, I like how the tree branch trails off into a less detailed abstract shape..it really brings the focus back to the figure.

It's very interesting to see you tackle a bird you're less familiar with. They have such a wonderful speckled and barred pattern I can imagine you're having a lot of fun with them. MOAR OWLS please!

Beautiful rendering.:) You're right about owl's markings being complicated. I did a screech owl in pencil once, and once I thought I was done, there were more markings I'd left out.
