Young Red-Tailed Hawk Feather - Leather Bracelet by windfalcon Young Red-Tailed Hawk Feather - Leather Bracelet by windfalcon
Yet another piece of leather jewelry inspired by my trip to the New York State Falconry Association meet. One of the falconers had a full juvenile red-tailed hawk tail for imping (repairing feathers), and it was just so beautiful, I had to create something based off of it!

This is hand-carved from 7-oz leather and painted with acrylics. It has a gunmetal chain and glass beads, and is fully adjustable for any size wrist.

I may experiment with different ways to attach the bracelet, such as woven leather, or different types of metal (sterling silver for people with metal allergies). These are pretty fun to make :3 And I'm going to be making them for different birds, too!

Hey! Can you do this but painting it as a Harris Hawk feather? It would be lovely... I would like to buy one!

What type of leather are you using? I use 7-oz vegetable tanned leather, and I tool the shaft and vein in, then shape it while the dye is drying. I use acrylic paints to paint it. As for the wrapping, I did a bunch of trial and error to find a way that works best for me. Experiment and have fun! :3 Wire is pretty easy to use when you get the hang of it.

Hahah thanks! Feathers are gorgeous and perfect just the way they are - whenever I try to replicate them from leather, I always feel like I fall short.

Very good idea, very well released !
Question, does acrylics react well on leather, I mean how does it looks like after a while ?!?

I find that as long as I put a layer of sealant on the leather before painting, acrylics work fine on leather. :)

Hmm, I'm not sure! Since they'd probably be 6 inches or so, I'd charge $25.
