Artist's Comments
An ancient Norse legend tells of Yggdrasil, the World Tree. On this tree lived four stags, who ate of the bark. There was an eagle on the top, and between its eyes sat a falcon. Beneath the ground was a serpent, chewing on the roots in hopes to kill the tree, and a squirrel ran from the serpent to the eagle, exchanging insults from each.
This was raised from a 20 gauge sheet of bronze, approximately 10 inches across. I designed the bottom through chasing and repoussé. The 'tarnished' look was achieved with liver of sulphur, and then I used pumice and steel wool to get the raised portions to a shine. See the original sketch here: [link] |
