Secretary Bird vs. Cassowary by windfalcon Secretary Bird vs. Cassowary by windfalcon
EPIC BIRD BATTLES OF HISTORYYYYYYYYYYYYY

SECRETARY BIRD.

VERSUS.

CAAAAAAAAAAAASSOWARY.

BEGIN!

This is a minipainting commission for Ookamiichi08 on FA, who requested this epic bird battle be illustrated. At first I figured the cassowary would win, hands down, due to the fact that when it kicks, it can easily disembowel humans with its 5-inch-long blade-like claw, but then I thought maybe with its smaller size, the secretary bird might be able to throw some dirty moves, like talons right to the face.

WHO WON? WHO'S NEXT? YOU DECIDE (not really, but if you want to suggest other bird battles for the fun of it feel free!).

Watercolor and white gouache on hot-press Fabriano, 5X7 inches.

In real life the Cassowary would rip the secretary bird apart in a few seconds. I like secretary birds better though *3*

Yes indeed! I was once an intern at an animal park, and they had a VERY aggressive cassowary. He would follow my every step xD First I still thought he was kinda cute, until the caretakers told me that they could tear your intestines out with their kick.. ouch x'D

Anyway, I really love this painting. The coloring is just wonderful and the picture feels so energetic. I myself suck at making up poses so I was really impressed =o

Yes. I saw the blackbird defending its nest and the cute thing: there also was a bluetit with its nest and it was all like "Go, fight you guys. I'm just sitting here, watching you & stuff ... :iconimhappyplz:"

This is amazing. Well done! My gut instinct was that the cassowary would win, but you make a good point, a quick snake eater just might get the better of him!
Raven vs Redtailed hawk. Two of my favorite birds ever. And really... I'm not certain who would win that one, either.

Aw epic birds indeed! You chose the combi very well!
Humm, how about a parrot (kea! or a macaw? african grey?) against an equally sides predator (owl, eagle?) or corvid (raven)? Just some suggestions XD
Kea are bad ass too: they're quick, very clever, have nasty beaks, and there's the myth that thay have attacked sheep to eat their fat...

I think the major similarities between each is the presence of pale head/dark crest. Other than that they're pretty different.

Your right, I just looked up secretary bird. I didn't know about these till just now. They're extremely small in comparison to a Cassowary though. That would have to be a gigantor sized secretary bird or a micro sized cassowary lol.

Actually secretary birds are about 4 feet tall, whereas the smallest cassowaries are 4.9 feet. So certainly bigger than a secretary bird, but by less than a foot. :3 I used to think that cassowaries were emu-sized, but they're a bit smaller - [link] (a good video to reference size, despite how silly the video is)

I've seen some females get up to 7ft tall personally. But that's also at head height, if your referring to back height that would be around 5ft tall.

Yep! Females can get to 7 feet tall. I chose a male specifically so the sizes would be closer :)

I love Secretary birds, though I think for the secretary bird to win it would have to fly up and blind the cassowary as you said and then just leave and let the cassowary starve, other wise even with out the size difference I think the cassowary would win just because it has stronger tougher legs from running around all day and more feather bulk to protect it.

I'd love to see that prehistoric 4 winged bird

This is awesome! :D Well, in logical terms the cassowary probably would win because, as you said, it's bigger. But I love secretary birds so in my mind the secretary bird'll win. xD I do believe it has a chance to win though, because the secretary bird could fly up and scratch the cassowary's eyes out. The cassowary couldn't kick it because it would be above its head, and it can't fly up to kick the secretary bird either. :/

I wanna see kingfisher versus jacana. :D

AWESOME!

I'd say the Secretary bird could get some dirty moves in, but I have to say just due to sheer bulk, the Cassowary would likely win. Cassowary just needs one solid hit. Though the secretary bird could just be like, "Man, screw this!" and fly out of there!

Next up? Hmmm... Philippine eagle vs Ostrich!
