"It's gone! The potion!" Equinox remained hidden in the thick branches of the oak as she listened to the shaman below, "there were three of them, I couldn't do anything---!"
"Shh! Keep your voice down!" A second voice urged, "we must keep this secret! If anyone finds out Skekrill got their talons on that potion..." The gryphon's worried voice drifted off.
Equinox waited until the two gryphons disappeared into the forest before making her way up to the top of the massive tree. The theft happened no more than a couple minutes before, and the young gryphon's sharp eyes could just see the three dots disappearing into the western horizon. If I could get it back,
she thought, her talons digging into the bark nervously. The idea was mad...she saw those three gryphons - one of them was a terrifyingly massive brute. If they got a hold of her, they could easily tear her limb from limb...
...but the lands were at war, and she had a duty to help Twistoult, her Aery. Shaking her feathers with one last gasp of courage, the gryphon launched herself into the sky and pursued the three Skekrill thieves, still far enough at a distance to remain unseen.
They flew for miles, deeper and deeper into Skekrill territory. This is mad
she thought, this is enemy territory...if I'm seen....
Equinox worried they wouldn't land before sunset. Just when she was considering turning back, she saw the distant figures drop down onto a ledge. Immediately she folded her sharp wings and landed. It was harder for her to run than to fly, but she couldn't risk them seeing her as she got closer in the air. As she approached, she heard a high voice.
"Idiot shaman! Did you see him waving his talons, like it would do
A deeper voice boomed in laughter, "fool. He's lucky to be a coward. That's the only way he kept
Certain she was out of sight, Equinox flew up the cliff face, hidden by a ledge. She crept up behind the three gryphons, who opened a satchel and pulled out a glowing, green bottle.
"It's pretty," said a gray gryphon, who poked at it with a talon.
"CAREFUL," the small, crested gryphon screeched, grabbing the bottle into her feathers, "this is our ticket to glory! Don't break it!"
"Put it down," the large, deep voice of the largest gryphon commanded, to which the female obeyed. "I thought I heard something..."
Equinox felt her heart freeze in her chest. Immediately the other two gryphons went alert, scanning all around for any sign of movement. They began searching the area, all around, leaving the bottle unguarded...What should she do!? If she moved, they would certainly see her, but they were getting closer and closer to the ledge where she was hiding! Finally she could take no more - she had to move!
"I'm a fool---!" She murmured to herself, as she burst over the ledge with a flick of her wing. She landed hard on her front talons and took off at a run for the bottle. Her noisy wings immediately caught the attention of the gray gryphon.
Equinox closed her talons around the bottle, not bothering with the satchel. From all sides the gryphons closed in, closer and closer. She beat her wings desperately and leaped from the ledge.
"BRING HER DOWN!!!"
"Doamich, bring strength to my wings!!!" She shrieked, shooting into the sky as four massive claws raked through her haunch. Though stronger, she was swifter, and quickly gained distance between the pursuing Skekrill.
She didn't look back, not until she was safely in the forests of Twistoult. By then the sun had set, and Equinox flew only by the light of the moon. Still trembling, the gryphon landed clumsily and limped to the hut of the shaman...
