Phoenix Wings - Tattoo by windfalcon Phoenix Wings - Tattoo by windfalcon
A tattoo commission for *raveboitazz. This tattoo originally went through 3 sets of design changes before I redesigned it to this final design.

This is entirely hand-drawn and hand-colored. You might be wondering how I got both wings so symmetrical, and I was able to do that by use of graphite paper. Though, the really difficult part is getting similar color on both wings @_@ I think it looks fairy symmetrical, though. While the wing shape is supposed to be fairly exact, the small feather placements and fire are meant to be a bit different, since what bird has each feather exactly in the same spot, and when do two fires ever burn exactly the same way?

Drawn on 13"X15" Arches 140 lb hot press watercolor paper, inked with 05 micron, colored with Copic markers.

Watermark added by request.

Wow I've been doodling Phoenixes for a few days lol, searching up phoenixes cause my wings suck! I'm so jealous, you are very talented. May I ask, how did you draw the feathers? Any techniques?

Thanks, though it was *raveboitazz's idea for the feathers to turn into fire at the bottom.

Wow, most people would have just been lazy and flipped the image by computer, but it's great to see the effort you've put into it. Did the person you drew them for have them tattooed onto her?

Yep, the person I drew this for is in the process of getting it tattooed on his back. Flipping images on the computer is helpful for sketches, but for big, finished pieces like this, it's just better to go that extra mile and draw it :D Thanks for the comments!

Sorry I haven't posted sooner...been kinda busy over here! Anywho, Beautiful work! I can't really express how pleased I am with the final outcome of the piece! She took my words and turned it into an awesome piece of work that I will be proud to have permanently tattooed on my back! And yes it will be a full back piece that goes from shoulders to past my waist, in full color! I will be getting the outlining done while I am home on R&R from Iraq in a few weeks... I will post pictures of the progress. Soon as I get them done! Again thank you for your hard work!!!

Really? :boogie: Thanks! Barely anyone commented on this one, compared to my angel painting o.O I just guessed it didn't catch many peoples' eyes. The person I made it for really liked it, so I'm all sorts of happy.

Graphite paper, huh? *missing the point...oh well, it's still AMAZING how you got them so symmetrical like that* I love I love the details on all those feathers too, they all seem to have a different color entirely...and the "textures" of the fire down there are very well done, and how it all just bursts from the pinions...ne? :P Out of curiousity, how big is this? Like, is it planned to be on shoulder blades?

:giggle: Graphite paper is basically very thin paper with graphite (the stuff pencil lead is made of) on the back. When you put pressure on it, the graphite transfers onto the paper beneath it. So, in order to get a symmetrical wing, I draw the first wing on another sheet of paper, then transfer that wing on the good paper, flip it over (assuming the ink lines bled through so you can view them from the back), and then go over the lines to make the wing beside it.

You can get graphite paper at any art or craft store. It's really helpful when you want to transfer a drawing onto different or better paper.

And it's going to go down most of the back ^^
