Mary Sue - How to Tell by windfalcon Mary Sue - How to Tell by windfalcon
EDIT 3: 11/22/09 You guys are kidding me XD For goodness sakes, reaaaaad the liink here: [link] Every time I get a comment that reads "the one on the left is a Mary Sue because she has green hair and a power," I realize that they're not reading the description which contains this link: [link]

tl;dr: If 'special' traits fit in with the universe, it doesn't automatically make the character a Mary Sue. What if everyone else in Ami Machida's universe has green/blue/purple hair? What if everyone else has a cat power? Does that make her a Mary Sue? Not necessarily.

Please, spare me the time from having to point you BACK to the silly description and just take a minute to read the link. You know, the one I linked to a bunch of times up above. And the link here: [link]

EDIT 2: 10/11/09 I suppose this is long overdue, but for those of you with confusion, here is an explanation on why I perceive the one on the left as not a Mary Sue: [link] For the love of god stop whining about it D:

EDIT: 6/21/09 Okay, everyone, please chill with all the 'hay is my character a mary-sue!?11" questions. I get about 3 a day now and one thing you need to understand - I AM NOT AN AUTHORITY ON MARY SUES. This picture is a parody. Just for fun. The one on the right is obviously an extreme exaggeration of a stereotype and not the definitive definition for a Mary Sue. D:

Please full view. You won't be able to read the text if you don't.

For those of you who don't know, a Mary Sue, in a nutshell, is a fanmade character that is usually extremely beautiful, powerful, smart, talented, and in plain words, perfect in every way.

These characters tend to be quite a bother in fanfiction and role playing, since they simply can't be beat, and thus become boring.

Have any of you ever been rping, and come across a character who is like, " oh, well, that planet in the way isn't a problem *blows it up*"

Or, is like, "well, Vegeta and Goten and Trunks and Goku ALL have a crush on my character"

Yep. That's a Mary Sue.

So, for people who still don't understand, I made this little picture/diagram. Usually, Mary Sues have TONS of talents and TONS of powers, and no weaknesses.

Enjoy ^_^

I see your point actually :)
But, being invincible isn't the only Sue-thing

Wait, how old is your friend? I mean, when I was six, my favorite character of mine was the biggest Gary Stu you could get.
And now, well, he's not really.

haha, i think i would get banned off of DA if saying how old she was
basically, I'm 13 (haha, FINALLY 13 so i get a DA)
she's 12 and her birthday is on New Year's Eve *u* hurr hurr she has to wait

We all act much older than we are and do have minds, but lets seeeee....
she really loves writing
she can do anything if she wants to
and she loves making characters
though i do recall, when she was 11 and i was 12, before I made my da and before we knew what mary sues were, we worked with another girl alayay12 from DA, the three of us made characters
alayay told us what mary sues were, so i dodged the subject while both of them made kick-ass girls with long hair, bipolar twins, telepathy, queens of hell, controlling ghosts, blah blah blah
and really powerful badass shapeshifter transgender-ed warriors as friends, haha...

I helped them narrow it down to that character i described before...
I DONT GET WHY ALL MARY SUES ARE SO DANG BAD, they're either mary sue in a really bad antagonist way (like a thief that will never get caught or something)
if the character didnt start out mary sue but worked up the ranks, then i suppose its not mary sue
wow this message is long
and i still didnt get mah point across >:U BWAA

I know, I mean, it's not that Mary Sues are so bad-just a bit annoying to read about. But from what I learned, most Suethors are young and a bit inexperienced
I'm not saying your friend is though

A Mary sue that doesn't start out as one but progresses into one isn't a Mary sue, no. though, depending on the acquired prows, the development may need to be for a long time so as not to hit Sueness.

yeah, if a "peasant" became a super warrior with all the skills and everything in one month...
I'd be...
yea no

Personally, these kinds of Mary Sues annoy me the most.

While they're not, y'know, the worst thing on earth, They still annoy me to no ends.
I've had many a promising fic ruined by these characters who come in at the beginning of a 50-something chapter-long story, steal the canon hero's lightning in the first few chapters, and make it so the rest is just, well, y'know...

I had this one person remove my OC from that list and due to confusion I got upset.

I love this definition of a Mary Sue cause it shows that not ALL characters are 100% Mary-Sue free :3

And even the traits that you give Ami aren't even defined as Mary Sue since they are simple and not over done or over-extravagant like Jasmyne

I gotta admit, the whole Meow-Mix-song-cat-transformation is pretty hilarious.
