Leather Feathers - Group 1 by windfalcon Leather Feathers - Group 1 by windfalcon
Here's a collection of what I feel are the 'best of' among the leather feathers I've been working on for people. This isn't to say I didn't like the others, but these are my personal favorites :3

These are all made from 7-oz leather, painted with acrylics, and decorated with either wood, glass, stone or metal beads.

As a reminder, I take custom orders for leather feathers! You can find more information here: [link]

These are gorgeous! And the Tyrrlin feather's colors really remind me of a Western Tanager...

The Blue Jay and that one of Tyrrlin, how long they are? Just to have an idea...

The prices depend on size. You can see my price list here: [link] For reference, the blue jay was 4" (I think...I made so many!) The Tyrrlin feather was 7".

They're all beautiful, but I think I like the Blue Jay one best. Such pretty birds, and you managed to make it iridescent-looking!

Oh, I still just love these. The rich colors on the blue jay feather are stunning.

I'd love to see the other ones.

Looking forward to seeing more of these from you! The pricing is quite fair, too. I would love one, but I would have no idea what to get! :P Too many pretty birdies out there, especially when you include fantasy feathers...

Aw man I totally thought about doing something like this since most feathers are illegal to have and they'd make decent substitutes for bird magic work and other such practices

Yes! And leather feathers are 100% legal. :)

btw do you buy sides or remnants of leather for these smaller projects? I use to just buy remnants but I wasn't sure if buying a side would save money in the long run?

If you just want to make small stuff, remnants are definitely the way to go. I need larger pieces for masks, so I buy entire sides. I use the scraps from that to make the feathers.

I really want to learn how to make masks too at some point so I'll probably have to buy a side at some point XD I was really inspired by you and 2 other artists whose usernames I haven't memorized and I think they could be a hit at the pagan festivals over here if I really do get into it at some point. Money is the main reason I havent yet though considering I'll have to spend at least $100-$150 in one go for the leather I'm not sure I even have room to place XD
What leather do you use for your masks? I was kind of eyeing the craftsman Oak Double Shoulders since it was on sale this month, but I'm not so sure about the quality; or the Economy Single shoulder since I can get it at 8 sq ft instead of double that

I buy leather from Wicket and Craig, which has very good quality tooling leather. I used to buy from Tandy, but their quality isn't nearly as good. But if you're just starting out, you can get smaller sides from Tandy instead of the huge sides you'd buy from a place like Wicket and Craig.

I would steer clear of 'economy' leather. I got some of that when I was just starting out and it was pretty crummy. :0

I love the Eurasian Eagle Owl feather! My mother and I are falconers and we have a European Eagle Owl, which people commonly mistake for a Great Horned or Eurasian. The detail on each feather is exsquisite!!

man, these are so col. what inspired you to create them?

These were all commissions, so I made them to the clients' specifications :) As for what inspired me to make leather feathers in the first place, I realized as I was tooling and cutting feathers for a leather mask, how cool they would look as separate pendants.
