Guira cuckoos are SO COOL. I was first introduced to them by =SageGoat (who also did an AWESOME guira cuckoo-inspired Archaeopteryx painting. Go see it! [link] ). I then had the amazing experience of seeing one in real life at the National Aviary! They are so prehistoric looking, I love them.

These are a pair of guira cuckoos perched in a Cybistax antisyphilitica. I wanted this to be an exercise not only in painting birds, but an accurate tree as well.

Watercolor and just a bit of white gouache on illustration board, 8 X 10 inches

I LOVE these birds! I met one at Busch Gardens in VA. They have a very cool bird aviary . He perched on my shoulder and when it was time to leave he didn't want to get off cause he was falling alseep. I had to get a staff member to help pull him off. Needless to say he was very upset.

Great job capturing these beautiful birds!

I love Guira Cuckoos. The first I saw some at the National Zoo I called them mini-hoatzins. You've captured their inquisitive expressions well.
