Forest Spirit Cat-Leather Mask by windfalcon Forest Spirit Cat-Leather Mask by windfalcon
Something a bit different from all the birds and feathers. This is a forest spirit cat adorned with leaves. I rather enjoyed making a mask with ears! :D

8 oz hand-tooled and shaped leather, painted with acrylics.

This is available in my Etsy shop here: [link] Sold!

I apologize. What do you use to get a leather mask to keep its form? : /

Everything I try to make stays flat. xD

First, what kind of leather are you using, and what thickness? I use 7 to 8 oz vegetable-tanned (tooling) leather (leather thickness is measured in 'ounces'), though you can use thinner leather too. I wet the leather all the way through, shape it, and then put it in the oven around 270F or so, for a few minutes at a time, taking it out and shaping it between. Just be sure you don't let it dry too fast or too long, or you could end up with a mask that dries before you can fully shape it or gets burnt!

Oh goodness. I didn't know you could bake leather. XP Well, because I don't know anything, I just buy whatever hard leather I can get from my local Ren Faire. It's really tough, black on one side and brownish on the other... no noticeable scale-like stuff, just flat... I'm not really sure. : It didn't have a little tag or anything, it was just lying on a pile of other leathers. I'll try to bake and see what happens. I appreciate that! ^^;;

The ears are purrfect, but the face shape doesn't seem particularly feline to me. I think primarily it is because of the nose shape which is what I believe gave ~Calliope-Jones the impression of "birdlike".

Just stunning work. Your masks are hands down the best I have seen so far. The detail and painting you have alone is just wonderful!

Lovely work! Thanks for explaining how you added the great texturing with the small leaves. May I ask what you use to secure them? I'm still trying to find a leather adhesive that's reliable and super tough.

Beautiful and awesome mask!

You should make an 'Indoor Cat' mask next. I guess that would involve details such as household items they like to steal and hairballs (that end up on the new carpet). ;)

It's different, but not. Still looks birdlike to me. Still amazing, but... yeah. Birdlike.

How do you achieve the amazing layered effects that you get? On this mask the leaves that layer and curl out above the ears are fantastic. I've almost bought one of your masks several times on Etsy just so I could see how you make them. In my opinion, your prices are awesome for how much incredible hand work you put in. However, I totally understand wanting something and not having it fit in the budget. :)

I get the layered effects in three ways - the first is cutting and curving forward parts of the mask to make leaves. The second is attaching separate leather leaves in the 'holes' where the first layer is curved forward. And the other is that the surface is actually a bit 3D - by tooling the leather, I'm able to get actual texture.

Oh that is fantastic. I had figured out the cutting and curving and the tooling, but the leaves in the holes is an awesome idea. Thanks so much. :)

I love this mask! The carving is just amazing...such detail. Your designs keep evolving & growing more intricate. :-)

And it's not too expensive by the way, not by a long shot. If anything, your masks are underpriced for the market, considering the level of detail you're doing. Carved masks are a rarity (I should know) so don't be afraid to charge what they're worth. :-)

Thanks! :) I'm still trying to figure out what to charge. Some masks I find take much less time than others, and then masks like this take a bit longer. It's hard to figure out prices when taking in size, detail, and time. Oddly enough the painting portion took longer than everything else!

That happens to me too. Sometimes a mask that looks like it ought to cost more, doesn't 'cause it takes less time. Or, something that seems simple ends up getting complicated & being a time suck. It's all trial & error, & what the market will bear.
