Artist's Comments

My entry for the Cross Fine Lines Pen and Ink Scholarship Competition. The guidelines for the competition were to draw anything you wanted in pen and ink. Being a pen company, I figured it would be fun to draw birds using their own tail feathers as quills to draw each other (of course it had to be birds :D ).

I actually finished this drawing 2 months ago, but I wasn't sure if we were allowed to post them before they were judged. However, I received a letter a few days ago letting me know that the entries had been judged and I was chosen as an honorable mention winner! I received a $100 gift certificate which I promptly used to buy this awesome, green field bag that I had been lusting over for a while. My work may also appear around their stores.

The only thing that makes me sad is that they said they couldn't return any of the originals, so I made sure to take a nice scan before shipping it off.

Here are the winners of the competition:

Micron pens, Higgins drawing ink, 11X14 inches

Wow, there's so much detail and no smudges! I love the concept of them drawing each other with their own feathers.
It's hard to believe you only got an honorable mention with this!
Awesome job ^_^

I'm quite happy I got an honorable mention! In the letter they sent me they said that they got hundreds of entries which were judged by "representatives from The Museum of Modern Art, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum" (as taken from their website).

Here's the grand prize winner: [link]
and here are the three runners up: [link]

I personally think that the ink drawing of the person's face in the runners up is amazing o.O

Wow, it's so amazing! For some odd reason it doesn't surprise me that the grand prize is non-representational. In the case of the winners, tho, they are very good.
Congrats on the honorable mention! ^_^

i liiiiike it it's priiiiiiiiiitteh...

i can't believe the winner made a bunch of circle shaped dots....it reminds me of the "sculptures" (ahem...scrap metal...ahem...) outside and around MCC >.<

i mean...hers is a nice drawing and all...maybe it's because they didnt give a large enough sample of it =(
and the runner up with the building shapes...you could totally see all her ink lines in the solid color blocks D::::::

"He was visiting his mother, if you must know."
"... Is that a yes or a no?"

Heheheh, well, I try to be open-minded about art, but...I'm sorry, I just don't understand why that one won first place, especially with that drawing of the face in the runners-up. I mean, did you see it? Hot damn, that is some skill with ink!

The first place winner looked suspiciously like a fractal...but I will be respectful.

Personally, I think the ink drawing of the face that was a runner-up should have gotten first place, but I wasn't a judge. :D
