Artist's Comments

My attempt for the Artist Emulation Challenge over at ~freelancers. The artist I aimed to emulate was the bird, animal, and nature artist Peter Parnall. You may recognize his work from such books as The Daywatchers and Hawk, I'm Your Brother. His work is very unique, combining painstaking detail with vast areas of undetailed space. His raptors are, in a word, spiritual. He once stated, "I try to get the essence of the animal." I aimed also, to get the essence of the falcon, putting detail only in certain areas. Faithful to his media, I also used exclusively pen and ink.

I feel I actually put a little bit too much detail, but alas, this is only my second time trying my hand at emulating an artist's style. I like this piece in itself, even if it wasn't completely successful in its purpose of emulation. As you can see, the subject matter itself is something I took liberties with - the Celtic knot circlet around her neck, the metal 'bracelets' around her legs - I made this more of a fantasy piece than anything, but many of Parnall's works incorporate Native American aspects, giving the birds a more mysterious feel. My work merely takes the falcon from old America to old Ireland.

The actual title is Fabhcún, which in Irish means 'falcon.'

Pen and ink, A4 paper.

Ohh the detail in his brow and cranial feathers is really really awesome. I almost want to reach out and touch him and feel all the layered feathers. Even if you think it's not as successful as you'd like, I can definitely see Parnall's influence on this from the images I've seen thus far. The different touches you added also make it a great emulation that's also unique to you, which takes real talent. He's a lovely representative of the falcon, especially with the way his head is turned.

Whoa nice... Also, does the celtic circlet represent anything? I forgot what it was >_< ... Also, interesting note on the combination of ornimentation around the neck and the anklets, the character I draw most of the time, she wears something like that :XD: *points to avitar*, only she has these rounded spikes on her anklets. Anyways this is a nice example of a raptor. Now to sit back and watch him take down some prey. :evillaugh:

Kaguya-Hime, I shall never forsake you again like I have before. I will always remember your name forever. We shall all stay close.

Celtic knots can mean many things - one of which is protection. Later, they were used in Christian iconography (such as the Trinity knot and in the Book of Kells).

oooh lurvely. I gotta check this artist out. ^^ Nice style. Not sure about the head, looks a tad out of proportion but it looks like that might be the artist's style. The feet and the wings are excellent.
Hope you win.

It's not a competition, just an opportunity for the artist to challenge themselves. As for the head, it probably is a bit out of proportion, but as with most of my falcons, I give them fantasy proportions (longer wings, etc). Though, it's still no excuse for drawing the head that wrong :D

I ADORE how this came out.
i LOVE ink, especially with all that detail
you did a WONDERFUL job of this, and even if it isnt IDENTICAL to the style, i think its magnificently done, and definately when you see it you think right to that artist!

Lol! No, it's fine. I always give my pictures the wrong proportions too, but not out of choice lol. Sounds like a cool idea, I'd like to do a project like that...though not on the internet. I looked up that artist, he's really good! I love that logo he designed for the Cornell Lab.
