Barn Owl Wings - Leather Pendant by windfalcon Barn Owl Wings - Leather Pendant by windfalcon
Well, with all the barn owl leather feathers/masks I made, it was only a matter of time before I made a pair of leather barn owl wings! Gosh I will never get over just how beautiful barn owl wings are. *dreamy sigh*

These were carved from a bottom layer of 7 oz leather and a top layer of 2 oz leather - I just got a bunch of tooling remnants that are deliciously thin, and just PERFECT for the top feather layer for these pendants! The whole thing is painted with acrylics, varnished, and the chain is sterling silver. This one features a lovely glass bead that compliments the plumage, and a hanging leather feather.

This was a commission, but if anyone is interested in a pair of leather wings of their own, they are $85 (any species, real or imaginary!), plus shipping. Sterling silver is an additional $15.

You know, since I live in Oklahoma, and my family inherited some farmland, me and a family member went out looking for owls in a tree line.
Because I knew that crows tend to mob owls, I heard a bunch of crows and followed them. My family member didn't think it meant anything, and when we saw crows mobbing a brown flat-faced bird, I knew it was a barn owl. Yet that family member still thinks it was a hawk. Sweating a little...

If it was brown and flat-faced, it could have also been a female Northern Harrier!  They are hawks with owl-like faces (so in a way, both of you would have been right!)

Oh could have been. I still think I saw a light brown back and a white front. Are northern harriers all just have brown and white feathers like that?

Gorgeous. Barn owl wings are both visually impressive and impressive in how silent the bird's flight is.

*hugs* They are so fun to make. I'm still all like "weee!" when I finish them because I get stupidly excited about bird wing jewelry, even if it's mine.

Man these just keep getting more beautiful as you go along! I'm with you on the dreamy sighing. Their wings are just gorgeous. *_* I'm going to sit here and hope for magpie at some point. With the black and the interference paint for iridescent bits. Mmm it could be lovely! (or if it doesn't happen on its own, I shall just have to save up and commission you at some point for one.;D)

I love iridescent birds. It's so hard to capture that effect, even with interference paints, though!

True! It's especially difficult to photograph as well, but I just love the subtlety of those sorts of designs. I think other people do too, if the popularity of my black swallowtails is any hint! They're only black, iridescent blue, and white and it's such an elegant simplicity of color.

But we shall see! If you're open to the idea, I might have to commission you to try it out later once I have more monies. That would just look swimmingly good with a little black evening gown.:D

It's a beautiful pattern. I always admired the Barn Owl masks and would have bought one if I had the funds for it. For now, I will cherish my wonderful Kestrel wings <3
