Autumn Love by windfalcon Autumn Love by windfalcon
Autumn is the best time of year and anyone who tries to tell you otherwise has never lived in New England. The smells, the change in color not just in the trees but in the light itself, the way pumpkin and apple treats suddenly appear everywhere, and most of all, the fact that it finally starts getting COLD again, makes autumn my favorite time of year.

Here's my gryphon character in her favorite spot under an autumn tree, piecing together some pretty trinket from found things in the forest. And oops, it looks like I gave her ears by mistake. Whatever, she can grow ears if she wants. Yeah. >.>

Watercolor on cold-press paper, 10 X 14 inches.

awesome, i already like you, Autumn is the best season of the year! I LOVE deciduous trees even through where i live there are no native ones. Every tree my family has planted around our house so far is Deciduous.  Really nice art pulling some of my two favorite things together: griffins and autumn.

love this work, intant fav  :)   ^_^

I've always loved your trees, the little knots in it gives the picture a sense of life. The picture has just the right mood for autumn.

Watercolors and trees are two things I find to be very difficult character, especially at the same time, and you've accomplished both along with a highly detailed character. This piece is just so simple and so beautiful.

Caught my eyes, the textures and effects are really gorgeous especially the tree trunk and the leaves. I'd say keep the ears :D Did you leave out the background so that the subjects are more focused?

I adore your work, most especially your gryphons! This is so awesome, reminds me of the year I spent in the Catskills. Fall was indeed amazing. Wish I still lived where fall was a season and not a minor change in weather >.<

Love this, thank you so much for sharing so generously with us!

Gorgeous work
The foliage is very is very rich in terms of color, and the detail of the tree trunk is absolutely stunning!
And though you did not completely define the floor, the gryphon's pose is very natural, meaning that it does not look like she is floating or something =P The colors of the picture complement her feathers so well. Thumbs up for you!
I see some people asked for a tree-tutorial, you can add another request ;)

The tree was super easy! Maybe I'll do a tutorial sometime. Basically, you start with a wash of aureolin yellow, make it kind of sloppy with patches of white. Then while it's still wet, you charge it with cadmium yellow, cadmium orange and whatever red you want for the color. In the shadows, I used burnt sienna, yellow ochre, and green-gold with a bit of sap green. You paint the branches absolute last so they don't bleed with the washes.

What beautiful watercolor technique! I especially admire the intricacy of the tree bark and leaves. The subtle blue tint on the trunk contrasts well with the red shadows. Superb.

Beautiful picture and description of New England autumns. :) I love the mornings when the light is creamy yellow, coming through the leaves and over a foggy river or pond. :meow:
I love how you painted the trunk of that tree. It looks a bit like there's an owl sleeping in it!

Hehehehe a friend of mine spotted the owl too! Believe it or not I didn't even realize I had painted an owl shape there! I suppose the tree took on a life of its own :)
